STUDENT'S DREAMS SHATTERED
Young music student upset over budget cuts
Wednesday 11 April 2001
Year 8 music student Timmy McDermott is distraught by moves to slash the school's music budget by
$20, meaning they can't afford a new triangle for him. Timmy, who comes from an underprivileged
background, is relying on the school to buy the instrument so he can play lead triangle in the
school orchestra.
"There are plenty of competitors for the lead seat, and without a triangle I fear I will have
to play 3rd or 4th chair, maybe miss out altogether" commented Timmy, who has twice won the
National Youth Triangle Championships.
"Timmy is one of the most brilliant performers that we have seen in the world of triangular
percussion," said triangle expert Ralf Finbar "it would be saddening to see his talents wasted
because of a petty issue of $20."
School staff will announce a decision on the matter later in the week.
